Almost everybody loves tomatoes and Zucchini . Today in part two if the series companion planting\u00a0 we&#8217;ll talk about\u00a0 tomatoes and zucchini.\u00a0 They go together well in a dish they are great in salads raw or cooked in sauces and especially my favourite, Italian foods.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>Leafy Vegitables<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Plant lettuce varieties in the vacant spots in your garden bed. The shade-loving<br \/>\nplants will enjoy the cover that tall tomato plant provide and the low growing<br \/>\nlettuce will act as a living mulch, protecting the soil from erosion, nutrient<br \/>\ndepletion, and regulate soil moisture.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Root Vegetables<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nA wide variety of root vegetables make ideal tomato companion plants because<br \/>\nthey rely heavily on phosphorous to develop strong root systems. With tomato<br \/>\nplants feeding heavily on nitrogen from the garden soil, the root vegetables can<br \/>\nfocus more on root development than on greenery. Root vegetables coexist<br \/>\nwell in the garden together because they do not compete with each other for soil nutrients.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #339966;\"><strong>Parsley<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nAttract hoverflies to your vegetable garden by inserting some parsley plants<br \/>\naround the bed. These beneficial insects feed on many of the destructive<br \/>\ngarden pests that seek out and destroy tomato crops.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #008000;\"><strong>Borage<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nPlant some borage as a tomato companion plant in your garden to bolster the<br \/>\noverall health of your garden which, like basil, can add superior flavor quality to<br \/>\nyour ripened tomatoes. As an added bonus, borage is an organic repellant of<br \/>\nhornworms and cabbage worms.<br \/>\nBest Tomato Companion Plants<br \/>\nMarigolds<br \/>\nScatter vibrant marigolds in your vegetable garden. Not only do they add color<br \/>\nand cheer, but they can counteract root rot on tomato vines caused by<br \/>\ndestructive nematodes, tomato worms, and slugs.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Plants to Avoid in a Tomato Garden<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As important as it is to know whatPlants to Avoid in a Tomato Garden plants work cohesively in a vegetable<br \/>\ngarden, it is equally important to understand what plants do not make good<br \/>\ntomato companion plants.<br \/>\nTomatoes just do not work well with all crops, and a poor combination might<br \/>\ndiminish your yield and affect the health of your tomatoes.<br \/>\nAvoid this short list of plants that can bestow adverse effects on your hard-<br \/>\nearned tomato crop.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Cabbage and Broccoli<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nCabbage and members of the Cabbage family of plants can inhibit the growth<br \/>\nof tomato plants.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #008000;\"><strong>Fennel<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nThis tricky plant releases a substance from its root system that impeded the<br \/>\ngrowth of tomatoes and many other plants. Not only does borage repel voracious insects, but it also attracts<br \/>\nbeneficial bugs and honeybees to pollinate your zucchini flowers.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #008000;\"><strong>Beans<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nBush beans work well to repel garden beetles and other pests that bore into<br \/>\nzucchini plants and vines. Beans also release beneficial nitrogen back into the<br \/>\nsoil as they grow, which feeds nearby zucchini and boosts their fruit<br \/>\nproduction<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Radishes<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nRadishes make a great companion to zucchini because they deter squash vine<br \/>\nborers and beetles from making their way into the zucchini patch. Zucchini provides<br \/>\nprotection and shade from the heat of summer, and zucchini reaps the benefits<br \/>\nof the nutrients that spinach releases back into the soil.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Peas<\/span><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nPeas, much like bean plants, release beneficial nitrogen back into the soil, which<br \/>\nhelps zucchini grow because they are heavy feeders. The nasturtium plant is adored by the<br \/>\nhighly destructive pest, the aphid. Through smart companion planting, you can<br \/>\npurposefully use the nasturtium plant as a host and sacrifice them to help<br \/>\nprotect nearby plants that are bothered by aphids..<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000; font-size: 18pt;\"><strong>INSECT TIP<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Remember earwigs are actually a gardeners friend. <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>Earwigs<\/b><\/span>\u00a0Eat\u00a0<span style=\"color: #008000;\"><b>Aphids<\/b><\/span>. &#8230; <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-459 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/aladaymobilemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Forficula-auricularia-122-adulte-C-900-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aladaymobilemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Forficula-auricularia-122-adulte-C-900-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/aladaymobilemedia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Forficula-auricularia-122-adulte-C-900-1x1.jpg 1w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Earwigs live in moist, dark places, such as on the fringes of the compost heap or amid mulch. Earwigs are highly effective predators of many tiny insects, including aphids and other common pests. In most cases earwigs harmlessly go about keeping our enemies in check, so if they aren\u2019t doing any harm, leave them be. In addition, potatoes are heavy feeders that can<br \/>\ndeplete large amounts of nutrients from the soil..<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the third and final article of this series, Companion Planting we will talk about potatoes and strawberries.
